To Sunday, March 24, 2019 - 05:30pm
Contact Robert McCool, MCRS

This course will cover the basics of emergency vehicle operation, with an emphasis on safety and legal compliance.  The first portion of the course covers the hazards of emergency vehicle operation, Kentucky laws related to emergency vehicles and emergency driving, vehicle dynamics, the physiological and psychological effects associated with emergency driving, strategies for reducing those effects, and defensive driving techniques.

The afternoon portion of this course involves vehicle operation on a close roadway course, including simulated emergency response.

Members who plan to respond in personally-owned vehicles (POVs) should bring their vehicle to the practical skills exercise.  All vehicles must be in good condition, with good tires and no apparent mechanical defects, in order to be used in the exercise.  Personal vehicles and light / medium apparatus (SUVs, pickups, and light rescue or brush trucks) can be used during the practical exercise.  Heavy fire apparatus (e.g., pumpers and tankers) cannot be driven on the roadway course.

Location MCRS Station, 161B South Estill Avenue, Richmond, KY (and McKinney Driving Track, EKU)
