Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVOC)

This course will include a combination of classroom and skills training.  Classroom training will include an orientation to emergency vehicle operation, Kentucky laws governing the operation of emergency vehicles, legal and ethical considerations for emergency vehicle operators, Squad emergency driving policies, the physics associated with vehicle operation, the influence of speed on vehicle stopping distance and operator reaction time, the physiological and psychological impact of emergency equipment and speed on the vehicle operator, and techniques for minimizing risk and operating an emergency vehicle safely.

The practical skills portion of the course will include operating rescue trucks and personally owned vehicles (POVs) on a closed roadway course during a simulated emergency response.  This portion of the course includes maneuvers and exercises designed to evaluate participants' ability to maneuver vehicles carefully and accurately as well as their ability to exercise reasonable judgment during vehicle operation.


Location MCRS Station (161B South Estill Avenue, Richmond) and McKinney Driving Track (McKinney Skills Drive, Richmond)
Members who plan to operate their POV as an emergency vehicle should bring the vehicle to this course.
